記憶とは、ただ過去を思い出すことではなく、そのたびに書き直される、想像力全体のことではないか。
もし、私という存在と外部世界が分かちがたく混じり合っているとすれば、記憶とは、私自身をそのたびに作り替える行為でもあるのかもしれない。
Mutoscopeは、初期映画における原初的な視覚玩具のひとつである。映像は、鑑賞者がハンドルを回すたびに新たに現れる。まるで記憶のように。
本作では、打ち寄せる波、月の満ち欠け、水面に映した影と揺らぎ、骸骨など、誰もが一度は目にしたことのある現象や、根源的なモチーフを選んだ。
鑑賞者は、ハンドルを回すことで生まれるイリュージョンと、それらのモチーフから呼び起こされる記憶という二重の体験をする。

Memory may not simply be a matter of recalling the past, but rather an act of imagination that is rewritten each time.
If the self and the outside world are inseparably intertwined, then memory may also be an act of remaking myself each time.
The Mutoscope is one of the primal optical devices of early cinema. The image is newly generated each time the viewer turns the handle.
It resembles the way memory comes into being.
In this work, I chose phenomena and fundamental motifs that everyone has likely encountered at some point:
waves washing ashore, the phases of the moon, shadows and ripples reflected on the surface of water, and a skeleton.
The viewer experiences both the illusion created by turning the handle, and the memories evoked by these motifs.
